Our History

Moama Anglican Grammar began with a vision for an independent secondary school in Moama. In May 2004, the Murray Shire Council convened a community meeting at St James Anglican Church, where more than one hundred people gathered to support the idea. From this meeting, a steering committee was formed, which soon adopted a constitution, registered a company and established a Board of Management. Funding was secured through loans and guarantees, and the Federal Government was advised of the plan to open a new school by 2005.

With the appointment of Foundation Principal Mr Andrew Pullar, preparations moved quickly. Teaching staff were employed, uniforms and curriculum finalised and Murray Shire offered the Community Hall in Martin Street as the first school site. By February 2005, sixteen students commenced Year 7 classes in portable buildings, marking the beginning of Moama Anglican Grammar. Growth followed swiftly, with enrolments increasing to over ninety students by 2006, ranging from Year 5 through to Year 8. That same year, the School purchased land on Kirchhofer Street and prepared permanent facilities for the growing community.

In January 2007, students moved to the new campus on Kirchhofer Street, with more than 170 students enrolled. Development continued with the completion of Food Technology and Art/Technology rooms in 2008, alongside the School’s first international trip to Italy. By 2010, Moama Anglican Grammar proudly celebrated its first Year 12 graduates completing the HSC, coinciding with the opening of the canteen and the completion of the Middle School precinct.

Another major milestone came in 2011 with the opening of the Junior School (K–4), bringing total enrolments to 685. That same year, the School embarked on its first Habitat for Humanity service trip to the Philippines, beginning a tradition of international service learning. Expansion continued in 2013 with the completion of the Senior School and the purchase of an additional six hectares of land for future growth.

The 10-year anniversary in 2015 was marked with a community celebration, a school cookbook, and another Habitat for Humanity trip to India.

The following years saw significant developments in facilities and opportunities. In 2017, the Resource Centre was opened and dedicated on Foundation Day, followed by the opening of the TAS building in 2018. Students continued to broaden their horizons, travelling to Florida and NASA in 2019, while also achieving the School’s first Tournament of the Minds state win.

Leadership also evolved. After nine years under Foundation Principal Mr Pullar, Mr Guy Evans was appointed Principal in 2014. In 2017, Ms Teresa Deshon became the first female Principal of Moama Anglican Grammar, followed by Ms Carmel Spry in 2018. In January 2023, Mr Scott Downward commenced as the School’s fifth Principal. That same year, a major milestone was achieved with the acquisition of Gunbower Estate — an 84-acre property made possible through the generosity of the G&A Kent Charitable Trust.

In 2024, staff and students experienced Gunbower Estate for the first time, taking part in outdoor learning opportunities that will shape future programs. It was also a year of growth and celebration, with new Swimming and Netball squads launched, alongside international service and cultural trips to Cambodia and Italy. Later that year, planning began for a Multi-Purpose Stadium, with construction breaking ground in February 2025.

In 2025, Moama Anglican Grammar proudly celebrated its 20th Founding Anniversary — a milestone honouring the vision, courage and community spirit that first established the School in 2005. A pictorial timeline celebrating 20 years of Moama Anglican Grammar, and detailing key events and milestones in our school’s history can be found HERE. That same year, Education Outdoors programs commenced at Gunbower Estate, embedding hands-on, nature-based learning as a defining part of the student experience. Co-curricular opportunities also flourished with the introduction of new Basketball, Equestrian, Athletics, Golf, Soccer, Rowing, Australian Rules Football and Dance squads. Moama Anglican Grammar will continue to grow while remaining committed to providing personalised care and attention to every child.

From its modest beginnings in 2005 with just sixteen students, Moama Anglican Grammar has grown into a vibrant Kindergarten to Year 12 school. Its story is one of vision, resilience and community spirit, built by the dedication of families, staff and community partners. As we look to the future, our history continues to be written each day through the achievements of our students, the commitment of our staff, the leadership of our Executive Team, the guidance of our Board of Directors and the ongoing support of our community. Moama Anglican Grammar remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe, inspiring and future-focused education, ensuring that the next chapter is as bold and transformative as the first.
